Nutritional deficiency v Nutritional transition

·         Nutrition transition is characterized by the change in eating behavior that our country has been going through in the last 50 years. Previously dietary problems were characterized only by malnutrition (of calories and protein). Now are concerns are about the increased intake of sugars and fats leading to excess weight, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and at the same time anemia and nutritional deficiencies due lack of vitamins and minerals from a diet low in fruits, vegetables and legumes.

·         Several studies show that a balanced diet containing fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes and obesity besides preventing against various types of cancer.

·         The Brazilian diet tends not reach the optimum consumption of fruits and vegetables of 400g a day.

·         The APC supplements around 300,000 meals each month with donations of fruit and vegetables, bringing more quality to the plates of children, adolescents, adults, individuals with special needs and the elderly.

·         The PCA also performs periodic nutritional assessment is to learn more about the the nutritional status of beneficiaries and can therefore develop strategies to improve the quality of life of each person attending each institution.
